It’s not often I make a personal post on the work blog but I feel this is sort of a bridge between work and family life.
Last night I wrote on my facebook, “I want a salad for dinner. Just thought I’d put it out there and see what the universe delivers.” Next thing you know, Alex has taken off to the supermarket and when he arrived home he whipped up a delicious salad.
Okay, so that’s not so much the universe delivering as my husband reading my facebook but it did get me thinking; “If you wanted to put something out to the universe and see what happens what would it be?”
Purely selfish here but at the moment my list would include:
- tickets to Roger Waters performing, “The Wall”
- photographing a wedding in the snow
- having family portraits taken of my own family
- having a happy family (not entirely selfish and here at home we are pretty cheery, but I’d include the entire extended family in this. It has been a year of ups and downs for us all.)
This is the list I had in my head last night. I didn’t even get a chance to put it out into the universe… and this morning I received a phone call.
“If we paid for your trip to come out and shoot us, would you come over here?”
My older brother who I haven’t seen for seventeen years wants to fly me to one of the coldest places on earth, during their winter, to photograph his family. It might not be a wedding in the snow but it would certainly be a family portrait session in the snow and to see my family… wow. I honestly can’t put into words how happy my heart would be to see this part of my family. I think this would fill three of the things on that wish list.
It’s not settled yet and it may not actually happen, but I just think there really is something that connects us to others in a stronger way than we realise. Maybe it’s a family thing?
Family is what it’s all about.
On that note, I’d like to share a few photos that are the closest we have to a family portrait at the moment. Usually Alex or I are behind the camera so we don’t have many shots with all of us in there. My older two boys are missing but if you look closely you will see that there are actually four of us in a couple of these shots. Here is a little part of our family.![]()

Yes, Alicia, I totally agree with you, we ourselves have had many universe moments in our lives & careers and we deliberately stay positive, even when it’s difficult too.
I love your very real, heartfelt blog post and good things will come back to you. You just have to wish really hard from inside yourself and surround yourself with positive thoughts and influences.

That’s fabulous! I like to think that there is a connection and if what we are asking for is clear, from the heart, and put out into the universe in some way, someone will listen.
Unfortunately the universe hasn’t listened to my repeated requests for George Clooney… but I’ll keep asking
I hope your family photos happen soon!

Thank you Andrew, that’s such a lovely offer and if we were in Melbourne we’d likely take you up on it.
At this point we already have a photographer chosen up here we’re just trying to get the timing right between us, four children and their work/travelling.
